  • The Science of Companion Planting Workshop

When: Sunday, June 27th at 3pm
Where: Comfrey Commons, 1917 E. Mountain Rd. Guilford, VT
    Suggested Donation: $5 – $20

Companion planting has long lived in the lore of home gardeners. Perhaps you’ve always wondered whether those spots you reserved for marigolds were really doing any good. Or, you’ve watched hornworms decimate your tomatoes yet again and have asked the heavens whether there was anything else you could have done. This workshop will share some of the most recent science about companion planting for pollination, pests, nutrition, and more followed by an open discussion to share questions, ideas, and experiences among fellow gardeners.

The workshop will be led by Emma Schneider. Emma is a home gardener in Brattleboro and has volunteered in various capacities related to plants and public education (gleaning, community and school gardens, K-12 school env. education classes, the Retreat Farm). She has worked as a professor of Environmental Studies (Humanities) at Gettysburg College and as a high school Humanities instructor at Compass School in Westminster. Emma has been interested in companion planting for many years and is always playing with new combinations. She trained as a UVM Master Gardener in the spring of 2020 and enjoys opportunities to share garden science with fellow enthusiasts.

  • Winter Plant Dreams

Last year we started planning for opening day only one month in advance. It was spontaneous and messy, but Comfrey Commons happened, at least. This year we have the advantage of time – lots of it – in mid-winter pandemic lockdown and with many of the usual homestead tasks on ice for the season.

Drooling over seed catalogs and dreaming about someday having a greenhouse, we might’ve gone a bit overboard… But, you can check out the tentative Plant List for what we’re hoping to have here in 2021!

  • Group Ordering for Seeds, Plants and Supplies

We just organized and placed a huge group order for West River Seeds and Fedco, achieving the largest (20%) discount in all but one of the Fedco divisions – with nearly 50 people participating in the order. Awesome!

If you’d like to be alerted about future group ordering, let us know. We will be opening a group order for Fedco Bulbs (incl. Garlic) in late June.
